Tivoli has easily become one of my favorite day trips from Rome! Tivoli, Italy is only a 40 minute train ride east of Rome and is full of beautiful, scenic hiking trails, simple parks, roaring waterfalls, and stunning nature. I planned a solo trip to Tivoli today and I loved every second of it. Only a 10 minute walk from the train station is a very beautiful, but very steep, hiking trail that you can climb to overlook the entire city of Tivoli. From here I was able to see a birds-eye view of Parco Villa Gregoriana and Villa D’ Este, both of which I visited during my day here.
At Parco Villa Gregoriana, I fell in love with the catacombs, ruins, caves, tunnels, and, most of all, the beautiful great waterfall that ran through the middle of the the Aniene Valley. My entrance ticket was only €3 for 18-years-old or younger, but a typical ticket is about €10, but I would’ve paid millions. This park is a very easy hike for people not familiar with hiking large distances, but I found it very easy to work my way through the beauty of this park in about 1 hour. At the end of the park you are met with the Temple of Vesta that overlooks the entire park again and you can see the waterfall from the very top. Villa Gregoriana is one of the most beautiful parks I’ve ever seen.
Afterwards, I entered Villa D’ Este for €16 (If you are student overseas studying art, ask for the reduced student price.) Villa D’ Este was a beautiful mixture of an art/ history museum that connected to a never ending palace garden outside that is known for its water fountains. Every corner I turned within this villa left my jaw on the ground because of how detailed, intricate, and magnificent all of the water fountains were. Each fountains provides a history debrief next to it which I found particularly interesting because I think it’s important to know what you are looking at and its significance. My favorite fountain was the fountain of Neptune because it was surrounded by fish ponds and if you walk around to the back of the fountain there is a staircase you can walk up that puts you right behind the fountain overlooking the entire gardens!
Tivoli was hands down one of my favorite places I have been. If you are looking for a place in Italy that surrounds you with nature and peace then this is the place for you.
