A Weekend in Malta

November 15, 2024- November 17, 2024

Having a relaxing weekend spent swimming in the crystals blue waters under the warm sunny sky of Malta was not on my bucket list for November, but I’m glad I can now add it and check it off.

Malta was a very unexpected trip for two reasons: 1) It was booked very last minute, as in 6 days before my departure date, and 2) Malta’s temperatures made it feel like summer all over again which I did not pack well for.

Regardless of my unpreparedness, I absolutely loved the weekend I was able to spend by myself in Malta. I found that Malta was a very good location for solo traveling because you can never go wrong with a beach, but there is plenty more things to do such as stores, restaurants, and activities to keep you busy.

I spent my first day wandering all around the country, going in and out of thrift stores, supermarkets, and souvenir shops just to ground myself and get a good feel of the island I would be staying on for the next few days.

I am typically not a huge fan of the big touristy areas because they can sometimes be overwhelming, but as mentioned before, when I’m solo traveling, I find myself enjoying these places more because there is always something to do. Malta was an incredible place to experience new things I have never done before on some of my travels because it was much more affordable than some other destinations I’ve traveled to.

Back of dancers before going onstage to perform

For my first night, I had reserved a spot for a traditional folklore dance showcase and dinner at the family owned Ta’ Marija restaurant. I had found this activity through Get Your Guide which I have always found extremely helpful when searching for very interesting a unique travel experiences for great prices.

For about €60 I had a night full of dancing, singing, a four course meal, plenty of drinks, and the friendliest waiting staff. I find experiences like these to be the ones that I cherish the most when I look back on my travels because being able to experience a cultures traditions in their most pure form is one of the greatest things anyone could be apart of during their travels. I definitely always try to make it a priority for myself to delve into the culture of the country I am visiting.

Another “must do” during your time in Malta, aside from eating Malta’s classic dishes and enjoying it’s traditional dances, is to take a trip to the surrounding islands of Malta.

My visit to Gozo and the Comino Islands were the highlight of my trip, and I found fantastic boat tour tickets on Get Your Guide that was €25 for a full day trip. This full day trip included an 1.5 hour stop at the Blue Lagoon on the Comino Islands where we had free time to swim, 3 hours of free time in Gozo to walk around it’s beautiful streets, and full transportation via boat that takes you to and from all these places across some of the clearest and bluest waters I have ever seen.

If there is one thing about me, it is that I love the beach and swimming, and although it as very cold this time of year that was never going to stop me from getting the most out of my visit to the islands as I could.

Upon arriving in Gozo, I found myself fascinated by the architecture, feel, and coloring of the island. Surrounding the capital, Victoria you will find many architectural cathedrals and buildings that may catch your attention, but if you are looking for activity then I would head directly to the center of Victoria where you will have no problem finding new things to explore and places to see.

In Victoria, I would highly recommend making your way to the Cittadella of Victoria because it felt like a hotspot of entertainment. This walled in area of the city contained the ruins of old Victoria, the old prison, a museum, souvenir shops, and the best view of the entire island of Gozo.

Malta is a very scenic country wherever you may be. When you take into consideration all of Malta’s naturally formed caves, rock faces, crystal blue waters, and colorfully painted skies, Malta really does classify as a natural beauty that feels very untouched.

This untouched feeling that Malta somehow manages to have kept throughout the years really made me fall in love with the country.
