A Weekend in Montenegro

Updated: Sep 24

My heart is buried in Montenegro. Herceg Novi, Montenegro is one of those places that I never thought I would travel to this year, but it just so happened that’s where I found myself going this weekend and it became one of my favorite all time trips!

I found myself heading to Montenegro because I have a family friend who plays for the Herceg Novi international basketball team and this weekend he happened to have a home game in Montenegro! Once I heard of the perfect timing of his schedule I knew I had to go see him play. Other than the basketball game, I had the rest of the weekend to travel around Herceg Novi, Igalo and other surroundings areas. I visited some amazing places and saw some stunning sights from boardwalks and castles all around the area.

For starters, I have to say that my all time favorite thing about Herceg Novi was the boardwalk that stretches all the way from Igalo to Old Town Herceg Novi. I loved the boardwalk because not only did it provide for a lovely walk along the clear, blue waters of the Herceg Novi bay, but it also provided a wide selection of small shops, thrift stores, gelato stands, quaint cafes, and welcoming restaurants that you could stop in on your walk.

Another aspect of Herceg Novi that I absolutely loved was how affordable and navigable the pubic transit was. There was a bus that I heavily relied on, the “1” bus, whenever I was going to and from Igalo/ Herceg Novi to the ferry port at Kamenari. It only cost €1 to ride the entire the entire way and it picked me up right in the center of Herceg Novi. From there the Kamenari ferry was a great use of transit because if you are just walking on as a passenger without a car it was completely free!

I found a lot of things to do in Montenegro during a great time of the year because there were not many tourist. However, some summer activities were closed during this time since it was not in season, so if you are looking to go to Montenegro for any kind of water activity summer is definitely the time to go! However, if you are more interested in looking at the historical buildings and strolling though the beautiful of Montenegro then March would be perfect for this kind of trip because the weather was absolutely beautiful and it was not busy.

Some of my favorite stops were all in the vicinity of Old Town Herceg Novi. I went inside the Kanli Kula Fortress for only €4, and then hiked my way up the mountain for about 15 minutes to get to the Spanish Fortress which was free entry. Of these two, I loved the Spanish Fortress the most because it’s precise location had the most amazing view of the mountains and sea below.

I could not recommend visiting Montenegro to anyone more. It truly was one of my favorite trips I have ever taken and it was a perfect weekend reset full of relaxing and interesting things to fill my days with.
