A Camping and Hiking Trip to Norway

May 10, 2025- May 14, 2025

School is over, summer has started, and the first adventure of many awaited me in Norway along with two of my best friends, Amelia and Graciella. Amelia was living in Volda, Norway during this time to attend school, so it gave Graciella and I the perfect excuse to not only visit a new country, but simultaneously visit one of our best friends that we hadn’t seen in nearly a year.

Amelia and Graciella are my soulmates when it comes to traveling together. There is never a doubt in my mind that when we make trip itineraries together it is going to consist of some of the coolest experiences that I have ever had in my life.

This trip in particular, was simply the best camping/ hiking trip I have ever been on. It felt like the prime outdoor adventure weekend that consisted of cold plunges, hiking, camping, bouldering, roadtripping, and more wilderness activities that Norway gave us the perfect geography to accomplish.

For starters, if you are also someone who enjoys nature traveling, Norway could not be a better place for you to visit. With its ‘freedom to roam’ policy you can quite literally set up a tent anywhere and call it home for the night.

For us, we set up camp directly in the middle of the Molladalen Valley. We were surrounded for miles by nothing but mountain peaks, snowy hills, and clear lakes that we later used as our source of freshwater and for our morning cold plunge. I have never felt a feeling of isolation that was so comforting as this one becuase there were no distrcations anyway you looked. Just pure beauty.

This camping trip was actually my first experience I would say “real camping.” I have camped before, but not in an area so disconnected from the rest of the world. Having to plan days worth of food, camping, gear, clothes, and nay other gadget we would possibly need throughout our journey was just another exciting part of the journey that made me thankful I was traveling with two people who had a little more experience with wild camping than I did. But, all in all, the only way to learn is to throw yourself into nature and learn as you go along.

There was a certain kind of simplicity to this trip that I found people often take for granted in their day to day. For example, breakfast. It sounds strange, but the act of taking your time to make your food, sit around waiting fo everyone to gather, and then enjoying a meal together is often rushed in the day to day. However, when you have no where you have to be, things as simple as meals become a highlight of your day. It gives a purpose to those moments of downtime you allow yourself to have in nature.

In addition to being able to take your time and appreciate typical mundane things, its during trips like these where you are able to fully prioritize your interests as well. There’s no schedule to follow and no people expecting anything from you, so you have complete control of your time and I often find myself spending it doing things I typically don’t allow myself to. In this moment, it was bouldering which quickly became a highlight for all of us.

The motto of this trip, thanks to a sign we saw while hiking, was “stikk ut” which means “get out there.” This is something that I want to take with me everywhere in every sense it could mean. Whether you’ve been stuck inside for the past few days, it can act as a reminder to get outside, breathe fresh air, and ground yourslef again. Or if you find yourself scared to try something new, it can act as a reminder to not be scared to put yourself out there and go chase after whatever it is you’re searching for.

This trip was a confirmation of how I hope to spend every day of my life, simply full of adventure and joy. In moments like these, I find myself appreciating things I typically take for granted, things I typically don’t pay any mind to. But I know as long as I allow myself to go on adventures such as these with people like Amelia and Graciella there is a light in my life that will always continue to shine brighter and brighter with each experience I gain.
