A Day Trip to Colmar, France

November 10, 2o24

On this completely last minute day trip from Basel, Switzerland, I found myself taking a train one morning to Colmar, France which not only will go down in my travel history books as my favorite day trip, but also as quite possibly the very best Christmas destination this year.

Colmar, France was advertised as a fairytale like town and it was nothing short of just that. With its crisp weather, holiday themed storefronts, and colorful buildings, Colmar was the perfect combination of all things beautiful to make it one of my favorite destinations.

The town, itself, is very small, so I felt as though I was able to see everything I could in just the day I was there. I kept myself busy strolling through the streets under old houses, scanning the shelves of souvenir stores, and finding a new store to stop in to try a new French treat.

Little Venice was the most adorable destination I had planned to see during this trip, and it was almost better than Venice itself becuase there was no tourism and completely unique architecture. Around Little Venice you’ll find cafes, souvenir shops and local squares that are more than enough to keep you occupied during your stay.

What made me fall in love with Colmar, France was it;s architecture. I loved the quaintness of the small village houses, and I loved the grandness of the cathedrals that stood tall in the middle of the squares.

Unfortunately, although this town put my more in the Christmas spirit than I may have ever been, my visit was too early in November so the Christmas markets had not opened yet. However, I can only imagine the kind of holiday spirit that will be brought along with the markets of Colmar because the town, itself, radiates the Christmas charm.

After only about 6 hours spent in this small village, I left there being able to confidently say that it has hands down been my favorite day trip that I have ever been on.
