Camping in Naples, Italy

I have been wanting to go camping in Italy for the longest time. I have always imagined this camping trip would be somewhere extravagant like the Dolomites, but it turns out you can have just as an amazing camping experience in Naples, Italy.
On August 23, 2024 I left the cit center of Rome and headed to Naple for a 24 hour camping trip. Of course, 24 hours is nothing crazy, but it was some of the most fun 24 hours of camping that simultaneously acted as a great welcome back to Italy.
During this trip, I was lucky enough to be traveling with someone who has a car, so it made camping very seamless and accessible whereas sometimes it is difficult to travel around in Italy (especially to the mountains). We did, however, take public transit from Rome to get to the city center of Naples where we would head to the mountains from. For the easiest way to make this transit, I would recommend downloading the app called “trainline”. It’s a super simple and easy app to understand as you just put in your departure and arrival city and it loads a list of hte closest stations to you along with the best prices. The app also offers the option to take a train or take a coach bus. For this trip, we decided to take a coach bus that took about 3 hours for us to arrive to Naples, Italy.
When we arrived, we immidiately switched modes fo transport and hit the road to head to Monti del Matese mountain range where we would find the most beautiful views, lakes, rivers, and campsite! Our campsite was one thing that I was very pleasantly surprised with stumbling across.
Italy has very strict camping rules and regulations Helen why sometimes it is very difficult to just spontaneously plan a trip because you will have to book an official campsite in advanced. We stayed at Campeggio Falode that was exactly what we were looking for. It acts as a composite as much as it does a weekend getaway destination because you have the option to stay in some of their cabins or to book a campsite for the night. They offer a restaurant and a small cafe along with free WiFi which comes in very handy when you high up in the mountains. We booked our campsite for about $10 for one night.
Something I loved about this campsite was it’s locations to surrounding areas of the mountains that you will not want to miss out on during your time here. The campsite is a 5 minute drive from Lago del Matese which is enclosed by surrounding mountains that was absolutely stunning at sunset.
It is not a swimmable lake, but if you are looking for a place to find some beautiful, chilling waters there is another place we went to that fulfilled my urges to swim in crystal blue rivers.
Parco del Grassano is one of the many hidden gems that are popular within the community, but never really make it big in the tourist world. I found this park to be the prime destination for anyone in this region whether it be for some nice lunch, a relaxing stroll, or a refreshing swim. Its natural waters were crystal clear, and made for the perfect preparation to go on a hike nearby the park.
If you head southeast from Parco del Grassano for about 1 hour you will find another hidden wooded area that is full of people having picnic and having fun among some nature/ adventure parks scattered throughout the trees.
We did a simple hike with a nice view of the mountains that cut through the woods in Monte Taburno in Vitulano. It was a very moderate hike with a view that was just as rewarding as any strenuous hike would have had. There was not a direct hike we followed because we found that just following some loose leaf paths scattered through the woods to be enough direction.
I think that camping trips are some of the most rewarding trips. There are no distractions or outside influences that get in the way of your travels. It’s a moment in the traveling world that can sometimes be hectic where all you have to do is simply be present and you will feel more than satisfied with how your trip turned out. I definitely want to plan more camping trips in the future.
