A Day Hiking Mount Circeo

March 22, 2024

What an incredible hike and a beautiful day to do it! I spent the entirety of this day hiking up the steep incline of Mount Circeo located on the coast of southwestern Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea, just northwest of the Gulf of Gaeta.

This hike took about a total of 5 hours going all the way up and back down again, but the trail I chose took me down on the opposite side of the mountain, so I got to see the entire surroundings of the mountain from all of it’s sides!

This hike was particularly special because not only was it one of the most challenging hikes I’ve been on, but the weather was the first day in Italy this year that felt like the beginnings of Summer! This, of course, made the hike as great as it was because the clear skies and sunny weather allowed for a clear view from the very top of the mountain of the entire sea down below!

Speaking of the sea, at the end of the hike I arrived to a beach access point that is directly at the base of the mountain so I as no choice but to go for a lovely, but very cold, swim after my hike. This was undeniably the cherry on top of this hike that made it so amazing and such a memorable experience.

On the descent down the mountain I came across a small cafe that has such a welcoming environment. Unfortunately, it was closed the day I did this hike, but it is definitely something to look forward to after a long hike if you ever go on it!

I had such an amazing experience on this hike, and it was honestly so rejuvenating to be able to get out of the city of Rome and experience a more nature oriented area of Italy that I had yet to visit! I also found this hike to be very refreshing because typically I tend to take weekend trips to the surrounding countries of Italy, so it was a nice reminder that even if I don’t have an entire weekend to travel I am still able to create amazing experiences for myself within Italy that’s less commitment when it comes to expenses and travel and just as memorable.

If I had one piece of advice it would be to take advantage of those free days you have every once in a while to visit a place you’ve never been before. There is always something new to see whether it be 1 minute or 1 hour away that you will always remember and be glad you got to see in your life time!
