A Weekend in Brighton, England

Brighton, England stole my heart and took my breath away! My weekend spent in Brighton was an unforgettable one that fed into my love for great music, sunsets on the beach, cute cafes, good food, comedy shows, homemade creations, and quaint streets always bustling with something new to do and see!

The instant I exited the train station in Brighton was the exact moment it became one of my favorite cities I have visited in Europe in the past year. There was a multitude of reasons that caused this small town to tug at so many of my heartstrings. It could have been anything from the queer friendly atmosphere to the comfort of being somewhere that is known for all the things I love.

Brighton is a very walkable city, so much like many of my other travels, I spent my first evening walking up and down the colorful streets and Brighton until finding myself near the boardwalk on Brighton Beach that was full of people sitting on it’s beach to watch the beautiful sunset that ended my first few hours in Brighton. One of my favorite things about walking around a new city when I first get there is because it feels like the best way to ground yourself in an unfamiliar area, but also it’s the best way to see things you may not have thought about that you can visit the following days.

So I spent the next day walking around going back to those places I saw to enjoy more of what they had to offer. I started the day with going into all of the small shops on Kensington Gardens Street to do some shopping. They have a lot of shops with homemade good and a large variety of second stores that sell their vintage products for a great price! It really is a thrift-lover’s dream, hence why I loved it so much! My favorite thrift store I went into was a “by-the-kilo” thrift store called Dirty Harry’s that offers a wide range of clothing types for great prices.

Coffee at Iydea Cafe

I was very hungry after all of my shopping, walking and trying on clothes, and the food in Brighton is just another plus to this amazing town. Right on Kensington Gardens Street is the most queer friendly, vegan cafe that served a delicious chai latte that I drank at their bar at the window to people watch and take in the individual beauty of this town.

Breakfast at the Garden Cafe

After my coffee break I got brunch at the best brunch spot ever called Garden Cafe, and it is exactly that! You walk in the doors and it feels like you are transported into a fairytale, garden land with delicious breakfast to enjoy surrounded by beautiful greenery! It was a very hearty and healthy brunch that I would highly recommend to anyone passing by.

After my brunch I headed toward Brighton Beach to check out the Brighton Palace Pier that is a beautiful sight because it is built on a pier above the water, but it is even more fun to go to because it is full of food booths, arcades, and an amusement park!

I spent most of my day near the pier and beach eating the sweet treats and playing games in the arcade. Another aspect of Brighton that adds to its charm is that it really feels likes there is something for everyone to do here. If you want a slow day you can go to beach, if you want a thrilling day you can walk 5 minutes to go to the amusement park. There is definitely always something to do in Brighton, and I didn’t have near enough time to see all of it!

Near the end of my first whole day I started heading toward one of the main parks in Brighton called The Level to have a lovely picnic while watching dogs play with their owners and skaters work on their new tricks at the skate park. There is such a family friendly feeling to Brighton that really made me feel at home because not only was every interaction with the people there so sweet, but it was the first place I have visited in a long time that gave me a stronger sense of familiarity and acceptance than I have had in some of my previous travels.

The literal brightness of Brighton with it’s colorful storefronts and the brightness that Brighton brought into my life was a kind of light during my travels that I will never forget and serve as a kind of feeling I will search for in my future travels. And now I know if I crave to visit a small town full of amazing people, things and places to visit, Brighton is just one plane ride away!
